Ruberg Jewellery Boutique

Continuing our series of ‘Hidden Gems’; where we reveal the local jewellery boutiques and shops we love and trust in London, we focus our attention this week on a Scandinavian secret.

Hidden behind the brash and busy eastern end of Upper Street in Islington, Camden Passage is home to the minimalist gem that is Ruberg.

Stocking a selection of what is essentially every scandi-loving girl’s dream jewellery collection; the feeling that anything in here could work for you is overwhelming. Understated, elegant lines of fluid gold and asymmetric silhouettes that work just as well with jeans and a tshirt (preferably a Ganni tshirt, obviously) as an evening LBD. There are no bad choices.

Founded by Danish jewellery designer Kamilla Ruberg following her graduation from the Royal College of Art in London, Ruberg is as calm, cool and collected as you’d imagine any native Danish girl to be, and, crucially, makes you feel like that too.

Clean lines, geometry and movement are Kamilla Ruberg’s signature style; from kinetic modern-day puzzle bangles, to a set of fluid gold rings that play tricks on the eye.

The collections have been finely tuned over the years, resulting in a broad selection of contemporary designers with a similar understated aesthetic; including well known British favourites Ruth Tomlinson, Shimmel & Madden, Polly Wales and Jo Hayes-Ward, as well as hard to find designers such as Marike Hauser, Sia Taylor and current superstar designer Yannis Sergakis.

The warm interior, recently painted a gorgeous, slubby pink, makes for a calm browsing space, trying on the rings, necklaces and bracelets in a relaxed, informal setting, whilst chatting to the friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. If you’re lucky you’ll get a glimpse of the resident goldsmiths working at the back of the shop at the bench, making bespoke orders and building up the collections, but I was too busy admiring the bespoke furniture – namely a modernist style handmade display cabinet.

The walls are adorned with the artwork of fellow Danish designer Kaja Skytte, following a recent collaboration during the London Design Festival.

The latest additions to Kamilla Ruberg’s work are a beautiful example of her trademark aesthetic; with asymmetric diamonds, unusual gemstone cuts and clean, gold lines resulting in truly unique engagement rings for the non-conventional bride.

Ruberg is open from Tuesday to Sunday, at 21 Camden Passage Islington, London, N1 8EA.
